Essential truths every child should know about Jesus …
The theme of the Bible, from beginning to end, is Jesus.
The apostle Paul says, “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent” Colossians 1:16-18 (ESV).
Because everything began with Jesus and finds its purpose in Him, we should teach every child about Him. Here, then, are ten essential truths that every child should know about Jesus:
1. Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of Man.
Jesus is uniquely fully God and fully man. During His time on earth, He was more than some spiritual individual; He was both God Himself and God in human flesh.
“Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory” 1 Timothy 3:16 (NIV).
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16 (NIV).
2. Jesus has a great purpose.
Jesus saves people from sin through His life, death, and resurrection. His great purpose is to be the world’s Saviour and restore sinners to God so they can live fulfilled lives and enjoy eternity with Him.
“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners …” 1 Timothy 1:15 (NIV).
“And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world” 1 John 4:14 (NIV).
3. Jesus loves you unreservedly.
Jesus loves you to the uttermost. In other words, He loves you to the full extent, to the limit. He will never let you down, never walk off or leave you.
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love” John 15:9 (NIV).
4. Jesus saves you from sin.
Sin keeps us from having a relationship with God, and we can’t fix this problem ourselves. We need God’s help. So, Jesus was crucified as the once-and-for-all sacrifice for our sins.
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” Romans 10:9 (NIV).
5. Jesus destroys the works of the Devil.
Satan is the one behind all the sin, suffering and sickness in the world. Jesus defeats Satan, restores what’s been lost, and gives us power and strength to overcome evil.
“The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” 1 John 3:8 (NIV).
6. Jesus conquers death.
You no longer have to fear death. If you believe in Jesus and follow Him, you’ll pass through death into eternal life, receive a resurrected body, and live in the new Heaven and Earth.
“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you” Romans 8:11 (NIV).
7. Jesus gives abundant life.
Jesus promises to bless those who follow Him. His blessings come in many forms. It’s more than your best earthly life now; it’s being known by and following Him.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” John 10:10 (NIV).
8. Jesus heals.
Jesus makes the broken whole. He heals physically, emotionally, relationally, spiritually and in many other ways.
“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” Isaiah 53:5 (NIV).
9. Jesus has a mission for you.
Your mission is to love people like Jesus loves people. Through your words and actions, share the Good News about the message of salvation and fullness of life through Jesus.
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age’” Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV).
10. Jesus is the only way to Heaven.
God promises that everyone born again through faith in Jesus will inherit eternal life in Heaven. Those who choose not to follow Jesus do not go to Heaven.
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’” John 14:6 (NIV).
To lay a strong foundation of faith, you should constantly teach these truths. Next to each truth, there’s a brief explanation and Bible verse. Look for teachable moments to inject and incorporate these explanations and memorize the verses with your children.
